What Does A 3-0 Start For The Hawks Really Mean?

The Chicago Blackhawks have the best record in the NHL after beating Los Angeles, Phoenix, and St. Louis — three of the league’s best teams last season. Incredibly, the Hawks haven’t been 3-0 since 1972, the same year Bobby Hull departed the club for the Winnipeg Jets.

Chicago fans are understandably giddy — as are the Hawks players, with Marian Hossa drawing a comparison to the 2010 Stanley Cup champions. The opening stretch of the schedule (10 out of their first 12 games on the road) isn’t friendly, making this hat-trick start all the more important: 22 of the team’s final 36 games are at the United Center, where the Hawks tied for the fourth-most home wins (27) last season.

But what kind of indicator are three games? It’s hard to say. Three of the four Stanley Cup squads for the Hawks started the season 1-1-1. Meanwhile, the 1968-69 team, which started out 3-0, failed to even make the playoffs. Here are noteworthy three-game starts to seasons past:
